Identity Theft

Just as you’ve finished your identity crisis and figured out who you are, some yahoo comes along and steals your identity (the one that’s all figured out).
Identity theft is a booming business, causing nearly $50 billion in losses each year. Identity theft has become buzz-phrase that has broad application.  You can have your credit card stolen.  Someone can use your personal information to take out a loan.
What to do? At the least:

  • Guard your social security number and PINs.
  • Don’t give out personal information to anyone who calls without verifying the identity of the caller, or calling them back.
  • Watch your back when using a debit card.
  • Don’t have more than two martinis at the airport lounge.
  • Buy a cross-cut shredder and use it!
  • Freeze your credit file. This is the best measure against identity theft. Go to: http://www.state.nj.us/dobi/division_consumers/finance/creditfreeze.htm.

Remember RegentAtlantic’s Golden Rule: Protect your identity, unless you want a new one!
